Bible : General Resources

The Bible

The USCCB's online version of the New American Bible Revised Edition.

A Catholic Introduction to the Bible : the Old Testament

John Bergsma and Brant Pitre offer a comprehensive guide to navigating the Old Testament that synthesizes the best of historical-critical research, the history of interpretation across the centuries, and the living faith of God’s people.

Jesus Becoming Jesus : A Theological Interpretation of the Synoptic Gospels

Thomas Weinandy's original theological interpretation focuses primarily on the events narrated with the Synoptic Gospels. Within the theological examination of these salvific events, Jesus teaching is likewise discussed, particularly concerning the Beatitudes and his relationship to the Father and the Holy Spirit. The overarching theme of this book, as the title suggests, is that Jesus, being named Jesus, throughout his public ministry and particularly in his passion, death, and resurrection, is enacting his name and so becoming who he is – YHWH-Saves. Jesus Becoming Jesus offers a singular, vibrant, and luminous reading of the Synoptic Gospels; one that reveals the theological depth and doctrinal sophistication contained within Matthew, Mark and Luke.

Paul, a New Covenant Jew: Rethinking Pauline Theology

This rigorous, yet accessible overview of Pauline theology, by Brant Pitre, Michael Barber, and John Kincaid,  is intended for ecumenical audiences. In particular, it aims to be the most useful and up to date text on Paul for Catholic Seminarians. The book engages the best recent scholarship on Paul from both Protestant and Catholic interpreters and serves as a launching point for ongoing Protestant-Catholic dialogue.

Christ in the Theology of St. Paul

Saint Paul's thought can be approached from many sides, but we shall always find it complex, whichever one we take. In this study by Lucien Cerfaux, it is rather the texture of Paul's thought that will be our chief concern. We can take it for granted that his thought is of the living kind; our aim then will be to uncover, as it were, the nerves and fibers of its various layers.
